A change of venue hasn't done much to fix Miami Dolphins running back Arian Foster's injury woes after the eight-year veteran suffered a groin injury against the New England Patriots in Week 2 on Sunday, the team announced.
When healthy, Foster is one of the elite running backs in the NFL, which has made him such a popular fantasy football target over the years. But due to injuries that saw him miss 23 games over the past three seasons made his fantasy stock fall in 2016 to the 31st-rated back by ESPN.com.
The supposed replacement for Lamar Miller, who signed with the Houston Texans during the offseason, Foster rushed for nine yards on three carriers in Week 2 before the injury. In Week 1 against the Seattle Seahawks, he ran for 38 yards on 13 carries, though he added 62 yards on three receptions.
Miller's backup last season, Jay Ajayi, began the preseason competing for the starting spot given Foster's inability to stay on the field.
Now that Foster is out, Ajayi will be the one to take over in Miami while he recovers, creating a new predicament for fantasy owners that are looking for help at the running back position.
Ajayi hasn't had much time in the league to prove that he could be a valuable addition on fantasy rosters. Last season he rushed 49 times for 187 yards and a touchdown. He did not play in Week 1, but was active in Week 2 and had 13 yards on four carriers when the Dolphins announced Foster would not return to the game.
His inability to impress during preseason though had some, like Jason Lieser of the Palm Beach Post, questioning if the Dolphins even had a running back worthy of starting in the league.
Given his inexperience and unimpressive stats during his short time in the league, Ajayi doesn't look like he could provide much to fantasy lineups, which should be enough for owners to stay away from him.
