The New England Patriots are down to their third-string quarterback, Jacoby Brissett, after Jimmy Garoppolo suffered a shoulder injury in Sunday's Week 2 game against the Miami Dolphins, the team announced.
The fill-in starter for New England while Tom Brady serves his four-game Deflategate suspension, Garoppolo was drafted by many fantasy football teams for the first few games of the season. In his first six quarters as the Patriots starter, he posted 498 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions, which added up to 34 total fantasy points, per ESPN.com.
Now, with two-and-a-half games remaining until Brady returns to the Patriots offense, the rookie Brissett will get the nod to be the man under center to try to keep New England rolling.
The Patriots drafted Brissett out of North Carolina State in the third round of the 2016 draft after watching him display his ability to throw the deep ball at the NFL Scouting Combine, via the NFL:
He managed to put together a solid preseason showing, including a 9-of-9 performance against the defending NFC champion Carolina Panthers.
Even so, a quarterback who's never played a regular-season down in the NFL is a big gamble for fantasy football owners.
After rarely working with the first team during the preseason, Brissett is unlikely to have a great rapport with the likes of wide receivers Julian Edelman and Danny Amendola in an offense that's already without tight end Rob Gronkowski, who's nursing a hamstring injury.
Given that, expect running back LeGarrette Blount to see more of the ball and the passing game to see a slight dip in action with Brissett under center. If fantasy owners are looking for help at the quarterback position, they're better suited looking elsewhere until New England's third option proves he can perform at a high level in the NFL.
