Well, when it comes to the most recent odds to win the 2018 college football national championship, apparently, the more things change, the more they stay the same.

Thanks to my look at this week’s updated odds to win this season’s national championship, you’re going to have a good idea of where you should place your futures odds betting bucks, I mean, besides on the favored Alabama Crimson Tide that is.

Updated Odds & Picks to Win the 2017 College Football National Title

The Favorite To Win The 2017 College Football National Championship: Alabama Crimson Tide +150

The top-ranked Crimson Tide (4-0 SU, 2-2 ATS, 2-2 O/U) are looking fantastic as they sit at a perfect 4-0 and enter their Week 5 matchup against Mississippi coming off a resounding 59-0 shutout win over previously unbeaten and borderline cocky Vanderbilt last weekend.

If you don’t know, Alabama was a +175 a week ago, a +200 pick back on Sept. 11 and a stellar +310 pick way back on June 2. The Tide are ranked 18th in scoring (41.2 ppg) and stellar fourth in points allowed (10.0 ppg) and are running the ball down their opponents throats as usual as they rank fifth in rushing (303.2 ypg).

At this point, no one even knows the names of many of their defensive players, seeing as how several of last season’s stars bolted to the NFL, but the fact of the matter is that it really doesn’t matter who’s playing defense for Nick Saban, they just swarm to the ball as a unit and make their opponents eat the turf they’re playing on – and I mean, buffet style!

If I forgot to mention the fact that the Tide may have the best quarterback of the Saban era is dual-threat signal-caller Jalen Hurts, oh well, there’s that too. If you didn’t bet on Alabama to win it all earlier when they were offering a better return, maybe now is a good time (ya’ think?).

The Smart Pick To Win The 2017 College Football National Championship: Clemson +500

The second-ranked Tigers (4-0 SU, 3-1 ATS, 2-2 O/U) are also a perfect 4-0 heading into Week 5 and are now a +500 pick to win it all, but I’ve got a couple of concerns after watching new quarterback Kelly Bryant struggle to throw the ball effectively against Boston College last weekend.

While Bryant is clearly not as good as his predecessor Deshaun Watson, the Tigers probably have the best defensive line in the country these days (sorry Alabama) and are ranked a phenomenal third nationally in points allowed (9.2 ppg), including ninth against the pass (134.5 ypg) and 12th against the run (92.5 ypg).

Clemson is also putting up a healthy 37.8 points per game to rank 32nd nationally in scoring and they have an elite running back in freshman Travis Etienne who is averaging a jaw-dropping 10.1 yards per carry (2192 yards, 4 Tds). Right now, the Tigers are looking fantastic, but if they’re forced to have to throw the ball, I’m just not too sure about Kelly Bryant at the moment. Oh, if you didn’t know, Clemson was a +800 pick to win it all a week ago, a +1200 pick back on Sept. 11 and a whopping +3500 pick on June 2.

The Longshot Pick To Win The 2017 College Football National Championship: Penn State +1200

The fourth-ranked Nittany Lions (4-0 SU, 2-1-1 ATS, 1-3 O/U) needed a miracle touchdown on the game’s final play to beat Iowa 21-19 last weekend, but I love them as a +1200 pick to bag this season’s national trophy hardware, mostly because they have a legitimate Heisman Trophy contender in quarterback Trace McSorley (66.1%, 1,037 Yds, 10 Tds, 1 Int) and a player that I believe is probably the best player in all of college football in supremely gifted running back Saquon Barkley. The elusive junior has shown great versatility by rushing for 518 yards and four touchdowns while adding 23 receptions for an additional 335 yards and two more touchdowns.

Penn State was an identical +1200 pick a week ago, a +1400 pick on Sept. 11 and a +2000 pick back on June 2. the Nittany Lions are one of the most offensively explosive teams in the nation and are ranked a stellar 24th in scoring (40.5 ppg) and have been stunningly good on defense as well by limiting their opponents to just 8.2 points per game to rank an outstanding second nationally in points allowed. Talk about a team with real championship value – and Penn State fits the bill!
