Fantasy football owners who banked on matchups when it mattered most in Week 14 came out ahead in a big way.
Pittsburgh Steelers running back Le'Veon Bell had a great matchup against the Buffalo Bills and used it to gain an eye-popping 47 points. On the other end of the spectrum, those owners who avoided Seattle Seahawks running back Thomas Rawls against the Green Bay Packers dodged a catastrophe seeing as he only scored six.
This risk-reward scenario when it comes to matchups is just as prevalent in Week 15 with byes concluded. Featuring tricky Thursday and Saturday games, owners have to start looking as soon as possible.
Here is a look at matchup-value comparisons at each position and sleepers to know.
Quarterback
Matchup to Exploit: Matt Ryan, ATL (vs. SF)
Matt Ryan owners still alive are some of the luckiest in fantasy football.
Ryan just dropped 21 points and three passing scores on the Los Angeles Rams—his sixth outing at 20 or more points this year. Given the matchup, Ryan should make it a seventh against the San Francisco 49ers in Week 15.
The 49ers entered Week 14 allowing the fourth-most points to opposing quarterbacks on average, allowing three or more passing scores five times this year.
Look for Ryan to have a huge day as the Atlanta offense continues to tune up for the playoffs.
Sleeper to Know: Colin Kaepernick, SF (at ATL)
Did anyone mention the 49ers-Falcons clash is ripe for fantasy production?
Now would be the time for owners in need to trot out Colin Kaepernick, who has a 36.7 ownership percentage. He has come up big in great matchups this year, hence 21 points against the New Orleans Saints and 32 against the Miami Dolphins.
The Falcons certainly fall into this category seeing as they entered Week 14 coughing up the most points to quarterbacks on average.
With his 49ers down early, Kaepernick will need to run or pass often, leading to a huge day.
Running Back
Matchup to Exploit: LeSean McCoy, BUF (vs. CLE)
There is no stopping Bills running back LeSean McCoy now.
Shady has 11, 10, 27, 19 and 16 points over his last five outings with four rushing scores in that span. He's done the damage in bad and good matchups, the stretch featuring teams such as the Jacksonville Jaguars and Oakland Raiders, which represents both ends of the scale.
Week 15, though, is amazing—McCoy has his best matchup of the year thanks to a game against the Cleveland Browns.
Those Browns entered Week 14 allowing the second-most points to fantasy backs on average before letting Cincinnati Bengals lead back Jeremy Hill score 20 on his own. Shady can do the same, if not better.
Sleeper to Know: Kenneth Farrow, SD (vs. OAK)
Kenneth Farrow is the injury replacement to know for the San Diego Chargers.
Starter Melvin Gordon suffered knee and hip injuries in Week 14, according to Michael Gehlken of the San Diego Union-Tribune. This left Farrow as the starter, which saw him take 16 carries for 55 yards and seven points.
Unless the Chargers go wild with veteran Ronnie Hillman, who only signed with the team late in November, Farrow is the starting back against a Raiders defense that entered last week allowing the fifth-most points to backs on average.
Opportunities equal production even for a guy like Farrow, so owners in need of unexpected, almost random help, now have a legitimate option.
Wide Receiver
Matchup to Exploit: Alshon Jeffery, CHI (vs. GB)
Owners can expect big things from Chicago Bears wideout Alshon Jeffery as he returns from suspension in Week 15.
Presumably, Jeffery has used the break to get back to 100 percent and has a statement to make on the field as he looks to cash in on a big contract this offseason.
This is bad news for the Packers, the defense allowing the fourth-most points to receivers on average going into Week 14.
Jeffery was slow to get going this year as the quarterback carousel continued, but Matt Barkley has shown well from a fantasy standpoint for weeks, meaning he's in for a major comeback game.
Sleeper to Know: Rishard Matthews, TEN (at KC)
Don't look now, but Tennessee Titans receiver Rishard Matthews ranked above notables such as Demaryius Thomas, Kelvin Benjamin and Dez Bryant going into last week, yet he is owned in 71 percent of leagues.
Matthews hit on an impressive streak with 12 or more points in four consecutive games and nine or more in five of six before a Week 14 dud (which is what happens against Denver's secondary).
Look for Matthews to also have a major rebound game against the Kansas City Chiefs, the team that last week topped the list in terms of points allowed to receivers. It's a huge weakness for the Chiefs and something Marcus Mariota will look to exploit early and often.
Tight End
Matchup to Exploit: Jordan Reed, WAS (vs. CAR)
Washington Redskins tight end Jordan Reed was a colossal dud in Week 14, totaling one point while trying to play through a shoulder injury.
The good news? Reed has an extra day off before a Monday game against the Carolina Panthers—one of the best matchups of his season.
Those Panthers entered Week 14 coughing up the most points to opposing tight ends on average, having allowed a touchdown to the postilion in three consecutive games before allowing another to San Diego's Hunter Henry.
Reed will merely be the next, health provided.
Sleeper to Know: Charles Clay, BUF (vs. CLE)
Time to ride the Charles Clay train.
Clay has been a shell of his former self this year from a fantasy standpoint, but he got back into the good graces of owners in Week 14, scoring a touchdown with 11 points.
Thanks to a game against the Browns, Clay looks ready to score his second touchdown of the year. Those Browns sat right behind the Panthers going into last week, then allowed two touchdowns to Cincinnati's Tyler Eifert.
Owners don't have a choice but to trust Clay in the encounter.
