In less than 48 hours, the NFL will be bringing us the official start of Week 14. This, of course, means we're about to enter the final stages of the fantasy football season.
For many of you, the fantasy postseason is about to get underway. Some of you have already started your playoff runs; others are simply looking to earn some respect in the consolation bracket. For those of you in the first couple of categories, this week is going to be critical.
Luckily, bye-week absences are no longer an issue, as all 32 teams will be in action from here on out. While this means you won't be scrambling for replacement players, it also means you have more players to sift through entering the week.
We're here to help you sort things out with our take on some of the top fantasy fringe starters of the week. We won't be looking at must-start players like Le'Veon Bell or Ezekiel Elliott—if they're on your bench, you might not understand how the game works.
Instead, we'll be examining those fantasy players who look just as at home on your bench as they do in the starting lineup.
Good luck!
Start 'Em: Jameis Winston, QB, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Second-year quarterback Jameis Winston has started to establish himself as a potential franchise quarterback for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He has also started to emerge as a viable starting fantasy option.
Oftentimes, the problem with starting Winston is an inability to find the end zone. He has just four passing touchdowns in his last three games and 23 on the season. However, Winston has also topped the 200-yard mark in 10 of his 12 outings.
Week 14 should bring quality fantasy numbers for Winston. He and the Buccaneers will be visiting the New Orleans Saints. Pro Football Focus rated New Orleans just 29th in pass coverage for the season.
Sit 'Em: Tyrod Taylor, QB, Buffalo Bills
Buffalo Bills quarterback Tyrod Taylor is another guy who has occasionally proven valuable as a fantasy starter—at least in leagues that reward quarterbacks for rushing.
While Taylor doesn't produce great passing numbers—he has just under 2,300 yards and 11 touchdowns so far—his ability to run the ball gives him added fantasy value. Taylor has 469 yards and six scores on the ground.
The problem is that Taylor's play can be erratic, and he can be a fantasy disappointment when he isn't running well. He has fewer than 170 passing yards and fewer than 40 rushing yards in each of his last three games.
This week, Taylor faces an aggressive Pittsburgh Steelers defense that is rated sixth in pass coverage by Pro Football Focus.
Start 'Em: Duke Johnson, RB, Cleveland Browns
Cleveland Browns running back Duke Johnson finds himself in a split backfield on a bad football team. However, this doesn't mean the Miami product doesn't have solid fantasy value. He does, especially in points-per-reception leagues.
Johnson has already hauled in 45 passes and has produced 681 combined rushing and receiving yards. While running back Isaiah Crowell was the stronger fantasy play earlier in the season, Johnson has gained value as Cleveland has moved away from the ground game.
If you are playing in a PPR league and own Johnson, go ahead and start him this week against the Cincinnati Bengals. The Bengals are rated just 22nd overall in defense by Pro Football Focus and are surrendering an average of 114.9 rushing yards per contest (23rd in the NFL).
Sit 'Em: T.J. Yeldon, RB, Jacksonville Jaguars
Jacksonville Jaguars back T.J. Yeldon is another player in a split backfield on a bad team. However, he doesn't seem to hold as much fantasy value as Johnson due to a declining role.
While Yeldon does have 38 receptions on the year, he only has six over his past three games. He has also produced a mere 134 combined rushing and receiving yards over that span. Chris Ivory and Denard Robinson have combined for 58 carries over the past three weeks, while Yeldon has just 24 attempts.
This week doesn't bring a favorable matchup for Yeldon, either. The Jaguars host the Minnesota Vikings, who are rated ninth in overall defense by Pro Football Focus and allow an average of just 303.4 yards per game, fourth-fewest in the NFL.
Start 'Em: Tyler Boyd, WR, Cincinnati Bengals
Rookie Cincinnati Bengals wideout Tyler Boyd has started to emerge as a viable fantasy option in PPR leagues. Of course, part of his emergence has been due to the hamstring injury suffered by star receiver A.J. Green.
"Grade 2 tear—it was 50 percent torn," Green said of his injury last week, per Katherine Terrell of ESPN.com. "But it's not bad, it's not torn off the bone or nothing like that. No surgery needed."
Since Green went out early in Week 11, Boyd has produced 15 receptions for 182 yards and a touchdown.
This week, Boyd and the Bengals face the lowly Browns. Cleveland is rated just 26th in pass coverage by Pro Football Focus.
Sit 'Em: Mohamed Sanu, WR, Atlanta Falcons
Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Mohamed Sanu has had a couple of strong fantasy outings this season, but he hasn't been the consistent weapon the team wanted to place alongside star wideout Julio Jones.
Sanu has three games with at least 70 receiving yards, three games with a touchdown and five games with at least five receptions. However, he also has four games with only two receptions and six games with fewer than 35 receiving yards.
In addition, Sanu is dealing with a groin injury suffered during last week's loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.
This could lead to Sanu being less effective against the Los Angeles Rams, who are still rated eighth in overall defense by Pro Football Focus. Slot receiver Taylor Gabriel is probably a better play in Week 14.
