You did excessive extensive amounts of research over the summer. You trusted your gut at the draft, for better or worse. You've made key trades and pickups along the way.
Everything you did this fantasy football season was about reaching the playoffs.
Perhaps it's a win-and-you're-in situation this week. Maybe you need some help. Either way, below are a few waiver-wire players who could change your season.
Let's be honest, though: There's not a league-winning superstar like David Johnson every year. But these guys could, at the very least, help you win this week.
Also, to the teams who've already clinched their playoff berths: A) Bravo, and B) don't get complacent.
Quarterback
Colin Kaepernick, San Francisco 49ers
ESPN: 22.8 percent
Yahoo: 25 percent
Since dethroning the mighty Blaine Gabbert for the starting job in Week 6, Colin Kaepernick has been the No. 7 quarterback in fantasy football, per FantasyPros.
He trails only Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees, Marcus Mariota, Kirk Cousins, Dak Prescott and Tom Brady.
The 29-year-old, who could become a free agent this offseason, has averaged 0.6 points less than the New England Patriots legend. He's 0.8 points behind Prescott, universally hailed as the Dallas Cowboys savior.
Pretty wild, huh?
Perhaps it was Kaepernick's peculiar injuries—you know, the ones that prompted head coach Chip Kelly to start the year with Gabbert—that kept fantasy owners at bay. Could his national anthem protests have played a part? Sure.
But now, there's no excuse for Kaep being owned in under a quarter of ESPN leagues.
Against the Miami Dolphins in Week 12, Kaepernick put up 35.1 fantasy points, and that's in a four-point passing touchdown format. He threw for 296 yards and three scores (with one pick) while also carrying the ball 10 times for 113 yards.
In six-point touchdown leagues, Kaepernick would've given you a whopping 39.14 points. He was the league's top fantasy quarterback—better than Brees, Cousins and Trevor Siemian, all of whom went off.
Starting Kaepernick still feels...risky, doesn't it? It's definitely not a move that's easy to swallow, especially if you haven't been following his fantasy performances closely.
Well, fear not. Here are his fantasy points in each game since taking over the starting job:
- 20.1
- 14.1
- Bye week
- 27.2
- 23.9
- 19.4
- 35.1
None of those outings would've ruined your week. Some could've won it, though.
Kaepernick gets the Chicago Bears, New York Jets, Atlanta Falcons and Los Angeles Rams to close the fantasy season. They're all beatable through the air, but Kaep's unique value—his rushing ability—provides both a safe floor and high ceiling. He showed up his speed against the Dolphins, via the NFL:
Don't be afraid.
Tight End
Vance McDonald, San Francisco 49ers
ESPN: 6.8 percent
Yahoo: 10 percent
See above section on Kaepernick before scoffing at a Niners tight end being included here.
Since Week 9, Vance McDonald has trailed only Delanie Walker and Jimmy Graham as fantasy's No. 3 tight end, per FantasyPros. He has two scores in his last four games but has four catches for 50 and 60 yards, respectively, in the other two outings.
Al Sacco of 49ers Webzone provided his full line:
The tight end position is a wasteland this year. Unless you have Jordan Reed or Walker, you know this. Even Rob Gronkowski, while dominant when healthy, has been a headache for owners this season.
That's the appeal of McDonald: He's safe—well, safer than most.
McDonald scored in each of San Francisco's first two games, but a hip injury limited both his playing time and production from Week 3 through the bye in Week 8. Since coming out healthy, though, he's been rock solid.
Here's his score from Week 11, via Better Rivals:
It's likely that finding a starting a tight end has been a hassle all year. Give the consistent, yet explosive McDonald a shot, even though Chicago ranks 13th and 12th at defending the position, per ESPN.com and Yahoo respectively.
Running Back
Kenneth Dixon, Baltimore Ravens
ESPN: 25.1 percent
Yahoo: 30 percent
Kenneth Dixon has been more hype than production this year.
Hailed as the savior to the Baltimore Ravens running game after the team parted ways with Justin Forsett in early October, the rookie has been outplayed by Terrance West for weeks.
During Sunday's 19-14 win over the Cincinnati Bengals, though, Dixon saw more snaps and more touches than West, per Yahoo's Brad Evans:
Luke Jones of WNST.net pointed out that even though their usage was neck-and-neck, Dixon was more productive:
Here's some more perspective from Pro Football Focus:
Baltimore has some so-so matchups for running backs down the stretch, but Dixon has proven to be a reliable pass-catcher for Joe Flacco. He's a good bet for double-digit points in PPR leagues.
Bonus: Wide Receiver
Sammy Watkins, Buffalo Bills
ESPN: 59.1 percent
Yahoo: 73 percent
Uh, hello?
This is Sammy Watkins—the Sammy Watkins, one of the NFL's most talented receivers.
His ownership should be triple digits, despite having been sidelined since Week 3 with a nagging foot injury. On Sunday, he returned and snagged three balls for 80 yards despite playing less than half of Buffalo's snaps, per Pro Football Focus.
Watkins looked pretty healthy here, courtesy of VT Football:
With the Oakland Raiders up next, the third-year man will be given all the targets he can handle as Bills receivers continue to drop left and right. He's a potential WR1 to close the year.
"[Watkins] is such a difference-maker as a player, and hopefully he can play a little more and more because we certainly need him," head coach Rex Ryan said, per ESPN.com's Mike Rodak. "We're a different team with him."
Snag Watkins if at all possible.
