Much to the chagrin of not only the Denver Broncos but also fantasy football owners, starting running back C.J. Anderson suffered a knee injury that is expected to keep him out for "at least a few weeks," a source told NFL Network's Mike Garafolo on Wednesday.
NFL Network's Ian Rapoport added that the Broncos are "looking at all options" for Anderson and hope it's just a minor injury.
With the Broncos and fantasy owners looking for answers in the backfield, both will consider Kapri Bibbs and Devontae Booker, Anderson's backups:
Booker, whom the team selected in the fourth round of the 2016 draft out of Utah, has been the clear No. 2 back in Denver after a strong preseason that impressed head coach Gary Kubiak, per Aric DiLalla of the team's official website:
He’s impressive. Today, he was really doing some great stuff. He’s right there. We know how he’s pushing our veteran players. The thing that’s been impressive with Booker is how well he’s done mentally, football wise. He’s keeping up on third down. We have a really good player there, so we’ll see how far he can come.
Through seven games this season, Booker has recorded 51 carries for 244 yards, a touchdown and 29 total fantasy points, according to ESPN.com.
He's also averaged 4.8 yards per carry this season, which is something fantasy football owners could covet moving forward with Booker as the main back.
There's little to suggest Bibbs will take many carries away from Booker while Anderson is sidelined. His lack of NFL experience and playing time might be a red flag for a lot of fantasy owners. Now in his second year in the league, Bibbs—who didn't touch the ball in 2015—has four carries and a reception through seven games this season.
Because the Broncos are not the most dangerous passing team, there will be plenty of stress on running game, and both Booker and fantasy owners should reap the rewards of having Trevor Siemian under center.
Over the next three games, the Broncos will face defenses that are prone to giving up a lot of points to running backs:
Because of that, it would be ideal to start Booker either as an RB2 or flex option over the next few weeks.
The Broncos have attempted 190 runs this season, which ranks seventh in the league, according to Evan Silva of Rotoworld. On the other hand, Denver's aerial attack has thrown 237 passes, which ranks last in the league.
That passing game won't be enough to carry the offense without Anderson, so look for Booker to see a lot of the ball with minimal support from Bibbs.
