The fantasy football waiver wire continues to come through in some of the oddest ways for owners.
Sometimes, these achievements of fantasy genius aren’t too difficult to see coming. A guy like Charles Sims of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers playing well in place of the injured Doug Martin on the way to 17 points this past week made plenty of sense in advance.
Others, such as Philadelphia Eagles rookie quarterback Carson Wentz outplaying almost every veteran in the league, are the types of risks owners shouldn’t take before several strong performances.
Either way, most waiver adds are created equal if owners put the time and effort into them. Here are the biggest names to have on the waiver list this week.
Week 4 Waiver-Wire Targets
Carson Wentz, QB, PHI (19.3 percent owned)
Time to stop ignoring Wentz because of his rookie status.
Wentz now has two outings of 19 or more points over the first three games of his career. Whether it is the scheme, coaching or Wentz is the next big thing at the position doesn't really matter right now—he's producing in a big way for owners.
It was easy to discredit Wentz's first two-touchdown performance and trip to 19 or more points because it came against the Cleveland Browns. Sunday, though, the rookie torched the Pittsburgh Steelers, with ESPN's Dan Graziano providing an interesting note:
Wentz hasn't become a player owners should throw recklessly into any matchup. Yet it is smart to grab him before the Week 4 bye with potential shootouts against the Detroit Lions and Washington after the break.
A top-10 scorer at the position might still sit owned in less than 20 percent of leagues.
Jordan Howard, RB, CHI (15.5 percent owned)
Owners might scratch their heads a bit at this.
Hear it out—Chicago sits in an 0-3 hole with major names such as Jay Cutler and nose tackle Eddie Goldman sidelined. In a loss to the Dallas Cowboys Sunday, starting running back Jeremy Langford got carted off with an ankle injury and was questionable to return, according to WGN Radio's Adam Hoge.
This looks like a team heading toward playing its young players much more with the season already lost. In that case, it's not hard to see Jordan Howard has been more effective than Langford, who has rushed for 3.7 yards on average.
Howard only has 12 carries, but he has shown much more in the way of explosiveness and decisiveness on the way to an average of 5.6 yards. This could make for a big day for Howard as soon as next week in what could be a shootout with Detroit.
This is a situation owners must monitor with a microscope. Before long, Howard could be a must-start player every week at one of the most important positions.
Terrelle Pryor, WR, CLE (27.7 percent owned)
The Terrelle Pryor breakout game took its time, but owners have no excuse to ignore him now.
A former quarterback who took up wide receiver to keep his pro career afloat, the Browns turned to the versatile Pryor Sunday in a way few could have seen coming.
The damage: Pryor threw for 35 yards, rushed for 21 more with a score and led the team in receiving with eight catches for 144 yards, giving him 23 points.
Cleveland won't always get to use Pryor like this, nor will he always come out looking so great. But Bleacher Report's Matt Miller made a great point about Pryor's main area of focus:
Sunday was the first time Pryor hit double digits this year, but it won't sniff being the last.
The Browns have to realize what Pryor can do now. Owners better be close behind, because while there will be some duds, few players in the league get as many chances to post numbers as Pryor.
Cameron Brate, TE, TB (0.8 percent owned)
Fantasy owners probably didn't hold their breath in the hopes of someone emerging for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after the team released former starting tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins.
Cameron Brate, though, stepped up.
Brate finished as the second scorer at his position before Monday thanks to his five catches for 46 yards and two touchdowns. PFF Fantasy Football provided an advanced metric of note:
ASJ wasn't getting much work as the starter. Apparently, that could change with Brate, though, who clearly has the trust of quarterback Jameis Winston.
While he doesn't boast a flashy ceiling by any means, Brate is a high-floor guy who should profit all season from playing with a young quarterback. Owners would be wise to get in on the prosperity.
